ZOIDS - Gustav Steampunk Special by SakuraBomb ZOIDS - Gustav Steampunk Special by SakuraBomb
DOWNLOAD FOR FULL RES KTHXBAI

---

If I had to guesstimate, I'd say I put in about 20-25 hours on this (though it's probably less - I spent lots of small chunks of time working on it, not one long sitting.)

And it STILL doesn't feel finished.

I am mostly happy with it, though. My poor unloved Gustav model was sitting in pieces on my closet shelves,
still bearing its repulsive black and neon-green paint job from my first failure of a customization.
Having just recently bought some metallic Testors paints, I decided to go crazy on this guy.

As common as Gustavs are as workhorses of the Zoid set, I feel they don't get a lot of love (I mean, just think of how
many Ligers and wolf-types are out there hogging the spotlight) and I wanted to make one really stand out.

I used spare parts from a number of scrapped Zoid models, including Gordosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Elephander,
Pteramander, a small Shield Liger action figure, and a few more miscellaneous bits I can't recall belong to what.

I also used bits and bobs from a pocket watch, jewelry, scrapped computer parts,
battery-operated hand-held fans and God knows what else.

The stuff on the cargo haul are pieces of pyrite, a sexy shard of bismuth (the rainbow-y rock),
a plastic diamond, a customized matching gun, and a LEGO muffler/exhaust pipe with a matching color scheme.

I'm looking into adding some hints of grunge and articulation at the hinges and plating with dark paint/ink,
as well as tacking on other vents/hoses/gears to empty armor space.

For now, though, I bring you the Gustav Steampunk Special!

I love the idea, I wish I had more cogs and coils to work with, I've plenty of Zoids that could use the makeover. xD

Amazing! It's nice to see that lots of people share my taste for steampunk mechas. It looks really great nad I agree with Eddie-chan: more chimneys (by the way, have you read Transformers - Heart of Steel? Nice concepts there)

Yes, I'm working on some new ventilation pieces now, using those tips. :3

As for Transformers in general, I've barely seen any of it (at least I can tell who a couple of them are) and mostly rely on Zoids and a general love of mechanical stuff to fuel my model customs. I may look into it for further inspiration, though. o3o

Heh, cute! You're right, it use some more 'decorative wear', but it's easy to get carried away with that. Some darker panel lining would also look great. Maybe some tinges of oxidization?

Yeah, I've been trying to think of how to add that hint of aging/wear. I may be adding a few extra exhaust pipes/mufflers for ventilation, but I don't wanna overdo it, as you said.

I just love messing with models. >u<

You could get some drybrush action going on at the exhaust. And really, do some pannel lining. You could probably pull it off with a red or brown microthin sharpie.

Here's a good drybrush video: [link]

Practice on some old sprues you know you have lying around.

:D Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely take them into consideration.
I don't have any microthin markers at hand, I'll have to find some the next time I'm out - Very Fine Sharpies just aren't doing it for me. :P I do have a number of sprues readily available :D

BISMUTH IS AWESOME. I have a piece on display with some of my Zoids, oddly enough.

Gustav really fits the steampunk look, especially with Scavenger in the comic being the sort to rebuild strange things. I get the impression this one's up to something too :D.

Yeah, I don't know if most of my other Zoids would look as cool Steampunked. o3o;

Dunno what role teh Steampunk Special Gustav's gonna have, but it sure do look purty :B

I really like him! :la: Though, if he's steampunk, I think he needs some more pipes/chimneys/big vents to let out the steam he's powered by. :3 Still, it's an awesome custom!

I agree. I think that may be one of the things I feel is lacking. I didn't have enough / the right kind of scrap parts to make them, though. D: I may have to find more odds and ends before I can make those sexy additions. Thank you for the suggestion! :D

I'd suggest plain pen tubes. Just take the pen apart, cut the tube to a size you like, carve/paint/add details to it, and glue 'em on. :3

Well, hot diggity! I have a bunch of pens lying around... It'd be ideal if I could punch small holes in them to give them a muffler look... hmm...

Use and exacto knife or little drill, or even just a safety pin, to put holes in it. The plastic isn't very thick. At least the pens I chew on aren't. XD

xD!

I used some wire cutters to segment a pen case, just need to smooth the ends some, add texture, and paint it :D

Thank you so much for the advice! It really is helpful.

Steampunking a Zoid! If I wasn't working on any customs (and had a spare Zoid to do so) right now I'd do that too! Fantastic work there!

:wow: Would take me closer to 20-25 weeks of non-stop work to get the beginning of a custom done with such quality. You've got fingers of gold !
I really like it, perfect "steampunk" vibe, gizmos, wiring, and the hull's texture and color.
For some reason, I get reminded of "Nausicaa"'s giant bugs, "ohms" when lookin' at the head. One more point for "steampunk" ^^

I did a double take when I saw this in my inbox. It's like a dream come true! It's... it's perfect.

This seriously is the most awesome thing that has ever happened to Gustav. You did a FANTASTIC job. The colors go together so well, as well as the miscellaneous bits.

I just want to hug this thing. It's an amazing customization.
